This modern, loft-inspired home, located in a sunny, flat, family-filled section of Mill Valley, began as a humble 1920s bungalow. A family of five purchased the home in 2007 in search of Mill Valley’s arboreal, relaxed vibe and proximity to the urban edge of San Francisco.

The original home was taken down to the studs to allow for a reconfiguration of rooms; an addition of 1,400 square feet created space for a master bedroom and bath, a dramatic restaurant-grade kitchen, and an open and airy living room. In order to minimize the home’s massing and retain a large front play yard for the family’s children, the front elevation was kept compact yet vibrant. A rusted steel chimney on the front elevation anchors two telescoping tri-panel aluminum doors; the bold composition has the benefit of encouraging year-round use of the front deck.

The modern design and interiors developed from the dialogue between many contrasts: urban and suburban, old and new, refined and raw. These contrasts energized the ultimate design: smooth plaster plays with flooring scarred from an industrial past, and steel-framed open stairs sit beside a velvety handmade dining table. As an interior designer and Remodelista contributor, homeowner Allison Bloom drew from her knowledge of esoteric product sources to select a rich assembly of handmade tiles, industrial fixtures, and relic classroom-style door hardware. Rock maple flooring (reclaimed from a sewing factory in Michigan) was selected by Bloom for both its ability to withstand the rhythms of family life and to lend a rich aesthetic depth to the modern home.
