Within the developer’s utopian enclave, a sustainable renovation pays homage to its past.
Located in Greenmeadow, Joseph Eichler’s develop-ment in Palo Alto (added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005), this 2,735-square-foot house underwent a green transformation courtesy of architect Mark Marcinik of M 110 Architecture.
The 1962 residence received a new copper radiant-heating system cast in the structural concrete floor slab, a super-insulated roof and walls, new Low-E insulated glass, solar-powered ventilation, and low-water-use plumbing fixtures. The house features new sustainable bamboo cabinetry and woodwork and decorative wall panels made of sorghum board. “Edible garden plants and a low-water hardscape create a landscape that seamlessly extends the interior spaces in the California modern tradition,” says Marcinik.
