The project consists of a comprehensive renovation of a contemporary residence located in Hillsborough, California. In addition to the redesign of all primary interior areas, the project scope includes a new site entry and canopy addition, as well as the extensive redesign of all exterior gardens and outdoor spaces.

The existing residence was commissioned by our clients in 1979; and was designed by Patrick Nagel of Nagel Hartray Architects LTD. The original design was realized in a classic Chicago modernist style in which the house and site were organized on a grid with clear delineations of interior and exterior space. A consistent palette of white walls and yellow oak floors fused interior zones with little differentiation.

Our approach to this project was to establish fluid, lingering connections between the building and its site, and to create a balance of identity and continuity for all interior and exterior zones of the house. The scale and orientation of the stairs and landscape walls were developed to allow the site to unfold sequentially, providing occupants and visitors an opportunity to connect with the landscape. A palette of rich, tactile materials brings character and identity to the broad interior zones of the house, and amplifies the color and texture of the gardens.
