The client knew what he wanted. He was looking for someone with a good ear, a good listener. He wanted a very capable designer and as important, someone who could build what he/she designed. When we first met in 2000, he said, “I want this house to define you as an architect for this millennium.”

As we spoke further, he expressed a strong desire for an architectural structure that reconciled two opposing concepts: a formal, minimalist glass box, allowing a strong visual connection with the dramatic surroundings, juxtaposed against a more informal element that was provocative, geometrically complex, mysterious and sensual.

The palette of materials discussed was strong and appropriate to the site conditions: steel, glass, board-formed concrete and later, Rheinzink panels for the curved wall segments. Passive solar design principles would be used throughout the design.

It was a wide-open invitation to design and build one of my best houses for a very special client and his young family.

About the Architect

Thumb Finn Kappe
KappeStudio

http://www.kappestudio.com/

Before Architecture at Sci-Arc, Finn was at U.C Berkeley and U.C. Santa Cruz studying philosophy, astronomy, geology, physics of music and cycling. At twenty-two, he returned to Los Angeles to build the Borghei-Cookston Residence designed by his father, Ray Kappe, (featured in Abitare, Architecture und Vohen and AMC).

Finn received his Bachelor of Architecture from Sci-Arc in 1982 and Masters of Architecture in 1986. During this period, he engaged in an ‘old school regimen’ of academics, working in an architectural office and construction management.

In 1986, Finn became a Partner of Kappe Architects Planners. Over the next four years, he was the lead designer on 9 residences, project architect on 5 others and participated in the master planning of the Harris Company’s Malibu Housing, Clubhouse and Restaurant.

In 1991, Kappe Studio was opened and several more residences were produced. During this period, Finn managed 25 million dollars of residential and commercial construction. His experience managing construction has been an ally in executing his own designs.

Finn has taught at the USC School of Architecture, at Sci-Arc and has lectured at UCLA. His work has been published in GA Houses, Abitare, Architecture und Vohen, AMC, LA Times Magazine, Architecture Magazine and the New York Times. Awards include the LABC Award for new SFD and finalist for remodeled SFD. Exhibits include LA On the Move, 100:100, New Blood 101 and LA 12 /2000
