Bond Street Townhouse

When the owner's purchased their new house at the corner of Bond and Bergen, it had been gutted down to the brick shell by the previous owner, leaving only the floor joists and little else. With nothing constricting us, and a corner lot with three exposures and two entrances, this raw space presented us with the opportunity to rethink the organization of the traditional 3 bay townhouse. We reoriented the stair as a generous switchback under a dramatic skylight, washing the house with light from above. On each floor, the stair lands at the center of an open, almost loftlike, space creating a contemporary layout within the traditional brick shell. The subtle interplay between the original and the new is carried through the detailing and aesthetic of the interiors. All flooring, partitions, ceilings are new, yet the original brick walls are left raw and exposed. New custom cabinetry is fabricated for re-milled salvaged wood beams, yet detailed with modern clean lines and crisp corners. Though the detailing and plan of the house is contemporary, the owners brought many cherished furniture pieces with them which added a patina to the aesthetic of the house and helped to express the life and story of the family in their new home.
About the Architect
MADE Architecture PLLC
MADE is an innovative design-build practice distinguished by our belief in integrating the architect and builder at every stage of the creative process. Our studio is located in a Civil War-era warehouse on the historic piers of Red Hook, Brooklyn. By combining a design studio, a fabrication workshop and a contracting team under one roof, we offer a range of services unique to the architecture and construction profession.
Fundamental to our work is our belief that design should be realized, it should get built. In every MADE project, design proceeds simultaneously with a concern for buildability. With this comprehensive understanding, we lead our clients through the entire process, assuming responsibility for executing a project that intelligently and creatively meets their desires. By integrating the talents of informed designers with the skills of inspired builders, MADE’s work exhibits a refreshing clarity of detail and craft producing an aesthetic both natural and unique.
Established in 2002 by founding partners Ben Bischoff, Oliver Freundlich, and Brian Papa shortly after graduation from the Yale School of Architecture, MADE now operates under the leadership of Ben as the principal. Ben is a registered architect in the State of New York and holds a Master of Architecture from the Yale School of Architecture and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Richmond. While at Yale, Ben was awarded the David Schwarz Good Times Award traveling fellowship for excellence in design and also served as construction supervisor for two years on the Yale Building Project.
